Mekeo growers take buai ban to court By Joy Kisselpar Dec 11, 2014. PNG Loop Lomai & Lomai law firm has filed an application in court for the removal of the betel nut ban in NCD. The law firm filed the notice on December 4 on behalf of Peter Kavo and 208 growers, traders and transporters from Veifa’a Village, Central Province. Mekeo is one of the biggest producer and supplier of the popular nut or buai in the Central Province. The Veifa’a Council of Chiefs has written a letter to Central Governor, Kila Haoda seeking financial assistance. They are asking for K2 million in legal aid assistance. The council wants the ban removed before Christmas. Among orders being sought, is for the Courts to compel NCDC and Governor Powes Parkop to pay fair, just and equitable financial losses, unjust damages, unlawful injuries and business costs suffered by all growers to date. They say income from belet nut remains the sole income for many families across Mekeo. pngloop/2014/12/11/mekeo-growers-take-betelnut-ban-court/#sthash.5YzAavNC.dpuf
