Melanie, My first memory of you was at the airport. Our luggage - TopicsExpress

Melanie, My first memory of you was at the airport. Our luggage didn’t make it back to Seattle on the plane, so we were at the desk, trying to make arrangements for delivery. That’s when I first heard the line, “That just isn’t going to work for me,” delivered, of course, with a smile. Ah, yes. I knew then that you were a force to be reckoned with. We had the good fortune of singing together for just six months, but oh, what an impact that made on both of us! Even though we moved across the country, and we were separated by many miles, our friendship grew stronger as the years passed. I cannot begin to measure the impact you’ve had on my life. I often find myself quoting you. It makes me feel smart. Your ability to find the lesson in every life event, big or small, is amazing. This is why I chose you as my friend. My heart is full when I hear you talk of you family – Allen, your boys, your folks, your brothers, and your precious sister. Your ability to love deeply is a reason that I chose you to be my friend. When we drove through drab Oklahoma during February, you found beauty in the bare trees and miles of brown grass, remarking that it reminded you of your own North Dakota. You find the beauty in all things. This is why I chose you as my friend. In the short time that we sang together, you taught me that the lyrics to a song are as important as the harmony and chord structure. What??? I continue to learn from you, and it’s why I chose you as my friend. Sometimes you talk like a sailor, but you’re modest enough to not want to show any cleavage. You confuse me and keep me on my toes, and it’s why I chose you as my friend. You understand that my silence means that I cannot find adequate words, not that I don’t care. Because you accept me for who I am, I chose you as my friend. You have a knack of complimenting and encouraging, making me feel confident and assured when I’m with you. This is why I chose you as my friend. Many times, you challenged me to do things that I thought were beyond my capabilities. Then you stood beside me and supported me until I was successful. This is why I chose you to be my friend. When you called to tell me about your diagnosis, we were heartbroken together. Even in the face of adversity, you continue to teach. Your profound thoughts, grace, and dignity are among the reasons that I chose you to be my friend. I am so thankful that we stuck around after rehearsal one night, sang a few songs, and started a wonderful friendship. Thank you for choosing me to be your friend. Music brought us together, but love will bind us forever.
