Melbourne and the Big Bad MoBarely a full moon ago, I wrote about the importance of a woman’s hair, sparked by the Yao long hair show in rural China. Well, this month guys, it’s your turn to be under the follicle spotlight as the month formerly known as November sharpens its bristles and spreads across the world in the guise of Movember. Invented in Melbourne, Down Under, it’s a way to look ridiculous, stop shaving, raise awareness for various aspects of men’s health and last year raised more than £92 million across the globe. The rules are pretty clear: start with a clean shave then grow a Mo until December the first. It’s also nice if you raise money for the various Movember-linked charities. And what of women unable to grow a Mo of their own? We can assist by swapping mockery for enthusiasm and spreading the word as well. Since two of the main target diseases are prostate and testicular cancer, take the time to learn the tell-tale signs below (it takes less than two minutes.) Early detection really does save lives. And if a man can live through the embarrassment of sporting a Mo, he can most definitely face up to the embarrassment of seeing a doctor. Go forth and educate! Prostate Cancer Symptoms Having to rush to the toilet to pass urine Difficulty passing urine Passing urine more often than usual, especially at night Pain when passing urine Blood in the urine or semen Weight loss Find out more from Cancer Research UK here. Testicular Cancer – Spot it early Go to the doctor with any testicular lump that is unusual for you. Find out more from Cancer Research here. And on a final note? I’m heading to Melbourne itself right smack in the middle of Movember. I shall be reporting on what I find – follow along on all the social media thingies using the hashtag #OzLab. Happy Mo-ing!
