Melissa y Mya On-Magnetic, When hybridizing Adeniums, if you - TopicsExpress

Melissa y Mya On-Magnetic, When hybridizing Adeniums, if you want to produce something truly exceptional; then you must remember only to cross only THE VERY BEST, WITH THE VERY BEST. I have always advocated crossing like with like. If you cross a pure white, with absolutely no pink in it with different pure white with no pigmentation then you will get 100% pure white seedlings. Cross a pure red with another pure red and again you will get again 100% reds: the same for picotees, stripes and even ‘Daeng Siam’ types (pale reds with a lavender picotee). When the first double Adenium arose ‘Doxon’ in Vietnam, (or is it ‘Dox Xon’? could any of our members in Vietnam let us know what was the first spelling of this cultivar as this would be its “official” name). ‘Doxon’ just being a red, then in order to produce other coloured doubles, you have to do what my hybridizer, Rudy, in his Venezuelan English calls “a crazy cross”. These tend to produce just “pinks” BUT sometimes you get unexpected results and they can be very rewarding. But, the percentage of good seedlings will be much lower than when crossing like with like. I recently harvested two nice seed pods of my ‘Raphaela’ pollinated with ‘Lucky Gold’, a crazy cross! The seedlings will be very interesting, probably not too good but hopefully just a few like a wonderful perpetual flowering carnation, lavender with a yellow picotee. That is the joy of hybridizing. The anticipation of what could arise from our seedlings.
