Melissas favourite author spoke at her school today. She was really upset about missing out on seeing him, as she has been home not feeling well yesterday and today, so I told her we would go in and sit at the back quietly. She is not fond of reading, so I didnt want to discourage her in any way when she actually has a favourite. We got there a few minutes early, and basketball was still being played in the gym so we waited outside the door together. While we were waiting, a very large, well-built man came out of the teachers lounge and stood across the hall. Melissa and I quietly speculated that it might be him....soon after, he spoke to a passing teacher and it became obvious that he was, indeed, the author. After a minute or two, he came over and introduced himself to Melissa, and they had a nice little chat about the fact that he was her favourite author, even though she usually didnt read chapter books and stuck to comics and graphic novels other than his series. I was really impressed that he spoke to her about how important it is to just READ, and praised comics and graphic novels as a choice for people who dont care for chapter books.... Much to her speechless delight, he then told her to come to the front after he was done speaking, and he would give her a free autographed book! On the way home, she kept hugging her new books (she needed two from the series, one he gave her, and the other we bought) and telling me that today was the BEST DAY EVER!! Sooooo....for everyone wondering, that author was Michael Wade, and the series is called And Then It Happened... boysbookshelf/
