Member of VFW Calabash Post #7288 and its Ladies Auxiliary and Mens Auxiliary joined a contingent from the American Legion and the Calabash Lions Club on 9/11 to remember the nations loss and to display their patriotism. They gathered on the Highway 130 overpass of Highway 17 in Shallotte, NC to wave flags, read the names of all of the victims of that fateful day and to pause for a moment of prayerful reflection. During their observance a procession of retired firefighters from the Carolinas passed underneath on their way from SC to Bolivia, NC for a Memorial Service. Earlier that morning a Memorial Service & Mass, coordinated by the New York Retired Firefighters Association, was held at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in North Myrtle Beach, SC. A piece of steel recovered from the rubble of the Twin Towers was blessed during the mass. Afterwards, a motorcade escorted by the Horry County Sherriffs Department and continued by the Brunswick County Sheriffs Department that included Rolling Thunder, the Brunswick County chapter of Concerned Bikers Association/ABATE, numerous Fire Department and Emergency vehicles along with patriotic citizens, transported the recovered piece of the Twin Towers to a Memorial Service at the Victory Garden at Brunswick Community College in Bolivia, North Carolina.
