Members of Community Action Penistone met with Councillor Joe - TopicsExpress

Members of Community Action Penistone met with Councillor Joe Unsworth and Councillor Dave Griffin today to discuss the Local Development Plan which proposes to build over 1400 houses on green belt land in Penistone. It was a productive meeting and the concerns of the group were acknowledged, both Councillor Joe Unsworth and Councillor Dave Griffin accepted that this would turn Penistone in to no more than a commuter town with an inadequate infrastructure putting further strain on our schools, health care provision and road network. . The majority of the proposed development will see the existing green fields and woodland between Well House Lane and the junction of Huddersfield Road and Halifax Road decimated with executive housing. This would not only be a major blight on the landscape but would in effect bring the town to grid lock during rush hour times due to the already over congested traffic on Barnsley Road and Huddersfield Road. Concern was also expressed that there would be a major detriment to the wild life which inhabits the wood land surrounding the overspill dam from Scout Dike reservoir. A place of natural beauty where kingfishers, woodpeckers, jays, owls and a host of water fowl currently live in harmony in their natural habitat. During our discussions it also came apparent that a local developer has already tabled a proposal, which was presented to the Town Council last year although we are effectively still in the consultation stage. From this we can only suspect that this was ploy to influence policy and the proposals now contained within the local development plan. Community Action Penistone is committed to challenging these proposals which allow developers to take the cheap and easy option of building on green fields, even though there are acres of urban land that should be redeveloped first. Houses that could be built on brownfield sites are going to be built on green fields instead. Penistone needs affordable housing which is built intelligently and sustainably, without sacrificing the woodlands and green fields that are so precious to our community.
