Members of the Inter-governmental authority on Development (IGAD) gathered Thursday in the Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa to discuss the situation in South Sudan. The summit chaired by Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn was attended by the presidents of South Sudan, Kenya, Sudan, Djibouti, Uganda and the prime minister of Somalia. IGAD countries have agreed to deploy a regional special force in South Sudan to protect monitors and vital economic installations. Shortly after the meeting, Mahboub Maalim, Executive Secretary of IGAD, said member states emphasized that political will was urgently needed to put an end to the crisis in South Sudan. The summit also stressed the need to recognize the former detainees as positive contributors to the peace process, but President Salva Kiir said it’s not yet time to engage the seven in talks. Seyoum Mesfin, Chairperson of IGAD Mediation Team, said the summit called on the parties to make a decision and show that they are fully committed to the peace agreement.
