Memo for November 3, 2014 - Semester 1, Week 11 Dear PMA Student or Parent, We apologize for all the difficulties the recent traffic closures of the parkway have caused everyone. It cant last forever! Please explore other routes and leave plenty of time to get to Carnegie. Many of you violinists have been waiting to sign up for the Heinz Hall performance on Dec. 7. Nows the time to do it. You can call us or e-mail us to reserve your tickets and your spot for the performance. Have a great week! Wed. Cello Groups Canceled This week we will not have our regular Wed. cello group classes in Carnegie. Cellists are encouraged to attend the Tuesday groups at PMA East or the Sat. morning group in Carnegie. Please see the website for exact times and levels. Enroll for Music Ed Classes Registration is ongoing for all those who attend Theory or Choir this semester. Please fill out an enrollment form and pay for this semester. The forms are available in Carnegie or on our website, pghma, under Music Programs and then Music Education. Parkway Closures Right now, the Carnegie exits to Rt. 376 are closed outbound and inbound. Its making getting to PMA very interesting. Please be aware of the closures, explore alternate routes (like Banksville or Noblestown Rds.), and leave yourself extra time to get here. The Toys A simple housekeeping item: we have toys at our Carnegie location to entertain siblings and students as they wait for lessons. We are very disappointed that the children take everything out and leave a tremendous mess for our staff to put away every day. Parents, please insist that the toys are put away before you leave PMA. We have organized and labeled the various bins so it should be easy. At PMA East, there is a pre-school room with toys. You are welcome to play with them in that room, but please put them away before you leave. Thanks! Parent Ed Seminar Each Sat. This week was better! We will begin the Music Games class for the children next Sat.The seminar includes useful information about the philosophy behind the Suzuki method, practicing, motivation, mastery learning, and making this work for your family. The seminar will take place at PMA Carnegie from 9:45 - 10:15am each Sat. that were in session for the next 4 weeks. Please take advantage of this - it will help you get the most out of your investment in music lessons. First Sunday Program on Nov. 23 Even though its not the first Sunday of the month, our next First Sunday program at PMA Carnegie will take place on Nov. 23, since Dec. is very busy for all of us with performances. We will begin with two recitals, at 2:00 and 3:30pm. Group classes for those older students who attend once a month will be held from 4:30 - 6:00pm. Thanksgiving Break, Nov. 25 – 30 There will be no regular private lessons, groups, or music ed classes during that time. However, many of the faculty members will be teaching makeup lessons. check with your teacher for the exact schedule. Flat Beethoven Were continuing this fun project and will be making a bulletin board in each location to display the photos of you practicing under Flat Beethovens watchful eye! The purpose of Flat Beethoven is to have his picture propped up near the student who is practicing and then take a photo of the two of them together that we can share in our classes the following week. Hopefully it will inspire some creative practices! Holiday Concerts for 2014 We have arranged three separate venues for holiday concerts this year, each of which is targeted for a specific group of students. • Sat., Dec. 6, PPG Wintergarden, 6 - 8pm - for pianists, cellists, and guitarists • Sun., Dec. 7, Heinz Hall, 1:30pm - 2:15pm - for violinists who are old enough to attend the PSO concert which follows. This will be limited to about 20 students due to space concerns. • Sun., Dec. 21, Carnegie Library in Oakland, Main Reading Room, 2 - 3pm - for the remaining violinists, flutists, violists, and any pianists who couldnt play on Dec. 6 Sign Up Now for the Dec. 7 Concert Violinists can now sign up to perform at Heinz Hall on Sun., Dec. 7, before the PSO concert. Students and parents who attend the pre-concert performance are obligated to purchase tickets and attend the PSO concert that follows. Students must be age 9 or older because the concert will be recorded that day and any noise from the audience will not be tolerated. Because of space limitations, we can only bring 20 to 25 children and they must all be violinists. We will need to have your payment in hand by Nov. 15 or your slot will be given to another performer. This only one of our three holiday concerts this season, so there will be other opportunities for all to perform. Chamber Orchestra Auditions 12/13 and 12/14 Each year, PMA runs a Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Maestro Lawrence Loh of the PSO. This year the orchestra will rehearse at PMA East in Squirrel Hill on Mon. evenings in Jan. and Feb. The concert, which will include all of our cellists, flutes, guitars, violas, and violins as well as the Chamber Orchestra, will be on Sat., Feb. 21, at the Winchester-Thurston School in Shadyside. Students who are in Suzuki Book 3 and beyond and at least 9 years old should speak to their teachers about auditioning. The auditions will be held at PMA Carnegie on Sat. and Sun., Dec. 13 and 14, and rehearsals will begin on Jan. 5, 2015. Violas to Perform at Phipps 12/14 Our PMA viola group, under the direction of Margaux Matz Pisula, will perform their holiday selections at Phipps Conservatory in Oakland on Sun., Dec. 14, from 1:30 to 2:30pm.
