Memorial - Ignatius of Loyola - 458 years ago TODAY (Basque: Ignazio Loiolakoa, Spanish: Ignacio de Loyola) (ca. October 23, 1491[1] – July 31, 1556) was a Spanish knight from a local Basque noble family, hermit, priest since 1537, and theologian, who founded the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) and, on 19 April 1541, became its first Superior General. Ignatius emerged as a religious leader during the Counter-Reformation. Loyolas devotion to the Catholic Church was characterized by absolute obedience to the Pope. -Wikipedia Sounds funny to memorialise someone who was loyal to the Catholic church. However, the anti-religious-institution fervour of our times is highly over-rated. Ignatius is one of the most important mystics of the last 500 years. He created precursors to all sorts of orders and fraternities. His spiritual exercises should be read by every Christian, and as a non-Christian I can even suggest it to meditation and theology enthusiasts of any community background with great determination. A great leader and planner, we remember today.
