Memorial Day is a time to honor those we knew and loved and lost. Memorial Day began as Decoration Day after the Civil War when citizens decorated graves of Soldiers who had died, many of who served in their state militias. The militia changed gradually over the years to become the National Guard. Hundreds of National Guard men and women have given their lives since the Guard has transformed into an operational combat reserve force that fights Americas wars, protects our homeland, and builds global and domestic partnerships that keep freedom safe. Memorial Day matters! Its a special day, and we must keep it special. Regardless of how we plan to spend our Memorial Day, let us pause to reflect upon the sacrifices of our fellow Citizen-Warriors who fell and their family members and friends whose lives are forever changed.
