Memories: We had a pair of walnut trees on our property (along with cherry, apple, and pears), English walnuts. When Dad built the cupboards in the eating area of the kitchen, he deliberately built the opening between the lower cabinets where the heater vent was the width of an average window screen. He then put small shelves on either side. We would pick up the fallen nuts, break off the skins, and put the nuts on the screens where they would sit with the house heat drying them. We saved the skins and made dye, Mother and I, for doing brown cloth. We also tried to be very careful as we cracked open the nuts, to get an intact halfshell. My brother Jerry Muceus, and I would sale the little half shells down the stream that divided our pasture. And Mother and I would glue together two intact shells and paint them with glitter to hang on the tree.
