Memory Lane--the Tarzan--Napoleon Showdown. _________________ Well, the time was the beginning years of 1970s at HSIU, Arat Kilo campus. Dont ask me the reason why he was called Napoleon, for I know not, nor did I ever care to know his real name. For sure, physique-wise he was not as short as Mr. Bonaparte, that French midget of a man. Be that as it may, he was a bkfst/lunch/supper-line inspector at Arat Kilo campus cafeteria, Addis Ababa, under the beloved Meto Aleqa. You cut the line, Napoleon would sneak upon you, and yank you out to the tail of the line. Napoleons tolerance to such behaviour was understandably directly proportional to your level of seniority on campus. The more freshman-ly (and sophomoric) you are, or you look to him, he would treat you with less respect. It was customary in those days to cut a lunch line for reasons of time, or simply as a matter of being rude and disorderly. In any event, our friend Tarzan (Initials YA, for the sake of privacy)---a nickname b/c I think he liked Tarzan movies--was not a habitual line-cutter. But when he did, let no one dare tell him not to. He was very dark-skinned with big blood-shot eyes. He could stare down the devil herself. One afternoon lunch time, Napoleon followed Tarzan to the spot in the middle of a long line where we were at. Tarzan rolled his big eyes in their socket, muttered something inaudible, and in a i-am-serious manner scared away poor Napoleon. Since then, Napoleon would avoid Tarzan at any cost. BTW, years later YA acquired his medical degree, and today he is an outstanding clinician in Ethiopia, and a top medical researcher in AIDS. How sweet the memory is, although so much time has elapsed since !!!
