Memphis Police have started contracting Blue Flu, calling in sick by the hundreds as a response to the City Council vote to shave their pay and benefits. I took a look at the numbers last week. The truth is that if the MemphisCity Council had simply raised the property tax slightly while eliminating some of the tax breaks that they have given to companies who have not kept up their promises for new jobs and other economic gains, they could actually bring in more revenue to resolve the underfunded pension. Poor people and the general public would feel less of an economic impact; or they could simply release retirees from the insurance plan altogether and allow them to accept an Affordable Health Care package. Instead they chose to screw the police and retirees even further. So it is time for Blue Flu to become contagious and for thousands of other city employees to catch the flu with the police.
