Memphis named top 10 city for filmmakers The Commercial Appeal//John Beifuss//Jan 22, 2015 Memphis is again in the ranks of the top 10 “movie cities” in the U.S., according to MovieMaker Magazine. The magazine lists Memphis at No. 7 in its annual survey of the best cities for filmmakers to live and work. The list will appear today on the magazine’s website (moviemaker). MovieMaker defines a “best” city as “an affordable, intellectually vibrant community” that supports filmmaking, as artistic expression, commercial enterprise and public activity. Memphis had been absent from the MovieMaker list for four years until 2014, when the city returned at No. 9. Kelly Leow, MovieMaker deputy editor, said Memphis’ higher ranking this year was testimony to its “tight-knit” film community. “As opposed to a big city like L.A. or New York, Memphis seems to have a smaller, tighter-knit community, with a Film Commission that supports every project that comes through, no matter how small,” she said. Leow said the magazine — which covers the art and business of making movies, with an emphasis on independent film — made its selections on the basis of several criteria. These include: number of productions during the past year; dollars generated by those productions; shooting days; “community and culture” (film festivals, film societies, film schools, and so on); access to equipment; cost of living; and availability of tax incentives. Nashville, sometimes regarded as an in-state rival to Memphis, especially in terms of the distribution of state financial incentives for filmmakers, did not make the list. Cities that did make the top 10 include New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Austin and Albuquerque (New Mexico has very generous incentives for filmmaking).
