Men smoking opium in a tea house in Persia, ca. 1910. Lene Schneider-Kainer was very interested in observing the life and culture of Persia during her stay there. Among other things she notes in her diary is the large amount of opium smoking done by Persian men. While living in the rented house in Isfahan, she encounters problems between two brothers, both servants, that relate to addiction to opium. In March 1927 she writes in her diary: It took hours before we could determine why they beat each other up like lunatics. They looked like crazed wild beasts, all torn up. It took a major effort to separate them. Ishmael wanted to keep it quiet, then suddenly as if bitten by a viper, called the police. Why? He wanted to calm things down in the name of Allah and the Koran. But then, his brother yelled out loud ‘To Hell with Allah, the Koran and Ishmael’. Then he was arrested. Since he is seriously addicted to opium, they had to release him after a few hours. Without his opium he would become seriously ill.
