"Men who serve and deploy together become cohesive units that start at the battle buddy level (2 troops), then fire teams, squads, and platoons and so on. They live, eat, sleep, and carry out their daily duties as a team. This creates close relationships between them that talk about family, future dreams, and all the loved ones at home. Hopes and dreams are shared. They also suffer intense hardships together, like when one of them gets a “Dear John” letter, or a family member back home passes away. Then suddenly and without warning they can be attacked by the enemy, and the battle is intense, and fear kicks in, which makes them a cohesive force. A friend may be wounded, lose a limb, or something; and they may also die! Camaraderie of those who served in a combat zone forms a friendship that lasts a lifetime, and a special bond is made that any civilian will not understand. They are bands of brothers!"
