Menard Wins Nationwide Michigan Event Todd Ridgeway Area Auto Racing News June 14, 2014 BROOKLYN (MI) – It’s been since 2006 at Milwaukee since Paul Menard won a NASCAR Nationwide race, but at Michigan Saturday afternoon he was able to nail down the victory in the Ollie’s Bargain Outlet 250. A beautiful afternoon of racing saw Menard move into second, after running in the top five all day, chasing after leader Joey Logano in the late going. Then, suddenly, with just four laps to go Logano slowed. A victim of a flat tire, Logan would give up the ship as Menard sailed by and cruised to the victory, the second Nationwide Series win of his career. “I hate for anything bad to happen to Joey,” Menard said of Logano’s flat tire. “We were better than him all day but I felt I gave it away on the final restart. I finally got into second and was catching him a tenth or more a lap. I saw him go off track and said, Well, I don’t need to feel too bad, I guess,” finished the happy winner. Sam Hornish Jr., who started the race by spinning and bringing out the first caution ended up second, Dale Earnhardt Jr. was third, Kyle Busch was fourth and Brian Scott rounded out the top five finishers. Said Hornish Jr., “On Lap 2, went down into the corner and I didn’t want to dive-bomb Earnhardt and went to the outside and got clean air on the nose of the car and the back end came around. That didn’t start off the way we wanted to. We just needed long runs and we were able to work our way back up front.” Regan Smith, who finished seventh, leads the series standings and holds a 14-point advantage over Elliott Sadler.
