Mend Fences with China and strike a Border Accord and conclude a Peace Treaty in give and take spirit! Neville Maxwells Indias China War and Bertrand Russels Unarmed Victory are a must read for all half-baked intellectuals and critics who raise a tirade against China or well meaning patriotic socialists and communists like me. అసలు లడఖ్‌నే జమ్మూ రాజు గులాబ్ సింగ్ టిబెట్‌పై యుద్ధం చేసి ఆక్రమించుకున్నాడు. టిబెట్ అప్పట్లో చైనాకు సామంత రాజ్యం [under the suzerainty of China - something akin to the status of Hyderabad Nizam State under British India].China was very weak and itself tormented by imperialist depredations and unable to intervene. So Aksaichin, which is but a bit of Ladakh in effect belong to Tibet. Tomorrow even if Tibet becomes independent they will not accept the present borders meekly. You have to come to negotiated settlement. As for McMahon Line China walked out of the meeting in protest and Tibet had no authority to approve it being under its suzerainty. Even so one should note that major clashes in earlier phases of Sino-Indian Border War occurred to the north of McMahon Line and not the South [obviously to which part China (Tibet) had solid jurisdiction] and only in later phases Indian forces were defeated and they could have occupied entire Assam if they chose to [Tezpur was also evacuated]. Then happened the unilateral withdrawal of China. Rest is history till now. China is always willing to recognize McMahon Line for all practical purposes [that is what even Chou En Lai made clear in 1959-62 itself] and on Aksaichin they would not budge. So they say give and take - we will forgo NEFA (Arunachal Pradesh) on which we have solid claims and you forgo Aksai Chin - and conclude a final border accord and Peace Treaty. Though governments change, foreign policy rarely changes - even if change is there that will be by small increments only. You may note that during Sino-Indian Border War even Nationalist China [Taiwan under the tutelage of US, which egged on India against Communist China] solidly supported the communist Chinese position and action. So my advice or suggestion is better come to terms with China and conclude a border accord on that spirit and solve the problem once for all - after all, Nehru is on record in parliament having stated not even grass grows in Aksaichin. We have to mind our own problems and not try to unnecessarily meddle in Chinas relations with other countries like Vietnam. China-Vietnam relations are like India-Bangladesh relations. It is like if Bangladesh quarrels and wars against India - how much agony and wrath we will exhibit that a country which we helped so much to liberate is reneging on us. Even now when the Chinese President visited India he was so guarded in his comments. And I am glad that Modi too, despite BJPs intransigent communal and chauvinist line, was not immoderate. See this editorial I wrote in LAW ANIMATED WORLD, on Modis visit to the US and the imperative need to settle with China.
