Menora WA - finally picked up my fridges from Tamala Park to make wicking beds. Graeme Laing and Charles Otway (and anyone else with experience :) ) could you please comment on the merit, or not, of PLAN B. Due to budget constraints and the fridges not being in their permanent position Im going for the low-tech/cheap/short-term use option for this season (PLAN A was high-tech/expensive/long-term). * Seedlings of leafy greens ready to go - could you recommend something that has a deeper root system to go in this mix or will the Amaranth be sufficient. * Using plastic pots (verge pickups) instead of ag pipe to create water reservoir and air pockets. Pots have been scaled so that there is 30cm of soil depth above them. Im a bit worried about the weight of the soil over the pots - will they collapse. * Going to use sand between the pots as part of the reservoir. I have heaps of sand. Not using gravel as I loath separating gravel from dirt! Also worried out using pine bark due to it breaking down and becoming stinky. What stops the sand from falling into the top of the pots through the drain holes? Should I put old sheep poo bags (left over) directly on top of the pots and then another thin layer of sand above bag to assist wicking. Then a layer of straw to filter the dirt? Will the sheep poo bag interfere with the wicking. * Using homemade soil; 1/3 compost, 1/3 gutless sand, 1/3 coir with added clay and rock dust. Should I use anything else to lighten; vermiculite or perlite? Or can I do without given PLAN Bs philosophy. * using pvc pipe (verge pickups) for water access - Ill cut slots in the bottom of this so that more water can get into the sand quickly. * I have changed the design of the drain pipe to a water level control device. I was thinking of draining it weekly to let it dry out and then fill up again and monitor the decline. Is this an OK thing to do? A new journey in gardening beginning :) Thanks in Advance.
