Mental health and mental illness have become hot topics since Robins death. I spent almost four decades working in this arena. I am FB friends and real friends (30 years) with a therapist who exemplifies what this profession should be about. Dr Ericha Scott is an artist and uses art to facilitate growth and healing in her clients. She also draws on her personal experience, great intelligence and deep caring. She is protective of her charges and frequently puts herself on the line. She would have been ultra successful in any profession she followed but she chose to advocate for and guide those of us who have been injured by lifes circumstances. It saddens and angers me that she should pay the price of being harassed and threatened for her caring and commitment. All of her friends and contacts can become as protective of Ericha as she would be of any of us were we to reach out to her. Robin has taught us through his dying that we must be on watch for each other, an unrequited vigilance. I suggest we rally our appreciation, notice and protectiveness around Ericha while she endures a troublesome bout brought on by her selfless client care, the same care she would proffer on any of us who requested or needed it. I also suggest we reexamine how caregivers are viewed, protected under the law and compensated for their sacrifices. Mental health professionals are seldom perfect, frequently inadequate to the challenges but are the last line of defense in the struggle with addiction, depression, post trauma, chronic stress and a ton of other quite common maladies. Yes we lost Robin but so many of us have been saved. Therapists go through the stresses of and with each client. Ive been there on both sides, we need these people and we need to encourage and safeguard them. TK
