Mentor on the Lake and Mentor Police Officers receive life saving awards... Several Officers received life saving citations from the Lake County Association of Chiefs of Police today at their monthly meeting. Sgt. Scott Daubenmire from Mentor-on-the-Lake Police Department received a citation bar for his life saving actions prior to EMS arrival in saving the life of a female in cardiac arrest. On November 26th 2014, MLFD MOLPD were dispatched to a residence for a female unresponsive and possible overdose. When Sgt. Daubenmire arrived, he located the female in the upstairs bedroom. He noticed that she was purple from the chest up being shaken by the home owner in an attempt to wake her up. Sgt Daubenmire, immediately placed the patient on the ground (a hard surface required for CPR) and checked her for a pulse. He found that the patient was in full cardiac arrest, so he initiated CPR and advised dispatch of his finding. Upon EMS arrival at the home, Sgt Daubenmire was administering good quality CPR to the patient. Sgt Daubenmire was also able to calmly update the arriving EMS crew as to what he found, what he did, and this enabled the EMS crew to immediately administer Narcan nasally while Sgt Daubenmire was still doing good quality CPR. Within 2 minutes of EMS arrival, pt had return of spontaneous circulation, regained consciousness and had no complaints. It is no doubt that with out the fast actions of Sgt. Daubenmire this night, that we would have much different outcome. His actions of initiating CPR immediately after recognizing the patient was in full cardiac arrest changed the potential deadly outcome of this call. Additionally, Ptl. Michael Bruening, Ptl. Ray O’Brien and Ptl. Rich Gerber from Mentor Police Department received life saving citations for their actions on the morning of 10/09/14. All three responded to a one vehicle accident on SR 2, where a vehicle went off the right side of the road, through a fence and into a tree. The officers found the male unresponsive. They were able to remove him from the vehicle and get the male back to the freeway side of the fence. The officers realized the male was in full arrest and immediately opened an airway, began CPR and attached a portable AED to the male. CPR was continued until the Fire Department arrived and took over. The officers then assisted with getting the male up to the squad. The male had to be shocked three times prior to arriving at the hospital. Family was contacted on 10/17/14 and confirmed that the driver did suffer a heart attack which led to the crash. He was at a local hospital and expected to recover. Congratulations to all of the officers! Their actions reflect highly on themselves, their agencies, and the cities they work for.
