Mentoring Ever wish that there is somebody you could talk to in your career - somebody who can offer you guidance in your pursuit of your dream career? An academic excellence is not a guarantee to your ultimate success in your career. No doubt, a great degree does open doors to excellent opportunities and juicy offers. To land a job is just a first step to a long journey in life. It is not the end. In a highly competitive society, almost everybody possess a degree, crap or otherwise. Then you find marketplace is like a pressure cooker. Either you keep the pressure in check and release at the appropriate time or you blow up. The little things that budge you in your daily work snowball to an untenable level. People tend to quit and look for another job. Or worse still - they remain where they are and suffer on silence, dying a slow death. Unfortunately, academic teaching is only part of the equation in life. There is a lot of things that you are not taught. Corruption, under table monies, peer jealousy and cheating are just some challenges. Ethics is something you have to grapple with and just talk about; learning to strike a balance with time management - your spiritual walk against your personal ambitions. I could draw up a whole list of other things - but that is not necessary. The marketplace is an exciting place. Wheeling and dealing is the norm of the day. But it can be tough and competitive. You does not have to be living on the fringe edges of ethics and values in order to succeed. It helps when there is somebody you can turn to talk to and bounce your thoughts. There is such a thing as mentoring. It is not counselling. It is about tapping on somebodys experiences to help develop your career path. ....will talk more....
