Mentors… Over the past 40 years, there have been a number of people I consider to one extent or another mentors. A few… Lee Kielman – my prime crime scene instructor, as well as fingerprint trainer. Lee imprinted into me a most important concept – that my loyalty was not to a case, nor the state, nor the defense. It was to the evidence, and that by serving the evidence, I became a channel for it to speak the truth. George Farnall – our boss. George once told me to judge a man on my own observations, not to listen to what others say, or what the “news” says. Truly an important lesson. James Holt and Ray Heisley – two very different men, different personalities, Sheriff and Chief Deputy, but they taught me an important lesson – respect every person, no matter who, grant them respect unless they prove unworthy of it. Both men were beloved in this community, at all strata. Dennis Durden – My first lead instructor in the ATA program. Dennis had two bits of wisdom which I am sure he still practices, and I try to. First, that retirement does not mean you do not work, it means you can walk away when the job sucks. Second, is that it was a good ride, but when the horse dies, pick up my saddle and walk off until I find a new horse. Been many others through the years, but these gentlemen certainly imprinted important standards on my little peanut brain…
