Menuhah Peters, my friend and fellow pilgrim on reGeneration - TopicsExpress

Menuhah Peters, my friend and fellow pilgrim on reGeneration Interfaith Pilgrimage 2013, asked for online resources to read the Quranic daily readings for Ramadan. I give her a big tip of my hijab! I have another non-Muslim friend, Anthony Manousos, who has observed Ramadan, including the fast. Here is the info I prepared for Menuhah, perhaps others will find it a useful resource. You can read Jewish and Islamic texts online at The Center for Muslim-Jewish Engagement at USC. The scholars, the late Dr. Fathi Osman, and Dr. Reuven Firestone. usc.edu/org/cmje/ Dr. Fathi Osman was an amazing scholar who spoke with lots of heart; I had the honor of hearing him at the mosque I attend some years ago. Here is an article by Dr. Firestone: jewishjournal/community/article/an_appreciation_of_islam_qa_with_rabbi_reuven_firestone_20090311/ Link to book he wrote “Introduction to Islam for Jews.” I took this as a gift to my host (Muslim) family at the Parliament of World Religions in Melbourne (2009) amazon/Introduction-Islam-Jews-Reuven-Firestone/dp/0827608640 Translations you may consider: The Sublime Qur’an by Laleh Bakhtiar, Ph. D. sublimequran.org/ This translation takes ayat (verse) 4:34 and the word that has been used for men to justify “beating their wife” (and for women to submit to this). As Arabic is written with consonants and the different vowels supplied creates different meanings, e.g. “to beat” can also mean “to go away.” The link explains more, but for me there is not one example of The Prophet, peace upon him, beating his wife, any of them. In one example he did leave and stayed away from his wives when jealously had caused disharmony. Message of the Quran by Muhammad Asad You may find this translation, which I like very much, was written by a Jew who came to Islam. Message of the Quran - Muhammad Asad. You can read his story, “The Road to Mecca,” which tells his story. I love this translation, but it is cumbersome in size. The Meanings of The Holy Quran by Abdullah Yusufali This was my first Qur’an; it has great footnotes that reference the Jewish and Christian texts on relative stories. I read it with those texts out so I could compare. He does use the translation that it is okay to lightly beat your wife. The Gracious Quran : A Modern Phrased Interpretation in English by Dr. Ahmad Zaki Hammad I recently bought this as the translation I will use this Ramadan. It came highly recommended.
