Men’s Soccer Three matches last week for the Bears, but - TopicsExpress

Men’s Soccer Three matches last week for the Bears, but everything early in the week was overshadowed by Saturday night. Tuesday was a disappointing home matchup against Mesa, who battled the 5th-ranked Bears to a 2-2 tie, but PC battled back from that with a quietly dominant 4-0 shutout at South Mountain Thursday. That set the stage for an epic battle Saturday night at home against 4th-ranked Yavapai College that was taken in by nearly 2500 people in attendance on ‘Pack the Stands Night’ (and over 1000 people on GoBears SportsNet on the internet). The Bears got the already-rabid crowd into a frenzy by scoring in the first three minutes, then the defenses took over, and it took a freak goal with :18 left for Yavapai to salvage a 1-1 tie. The Bears own the top seed in the region if they win the remaining three games, and that starts Thursday in Tucson against Pima at 7PM. Women’s Soccer A team that has struggled with offense all year long seems to have awakened at the perfect time, since the defense remained stellar for the Bears last week, not allowing a single goal in 270 minutes of action, and scoring 1 against Mesa, 6 at South Mountain, and 4 Saturday night against 10-win Cochise in netting three huge wins. The 3-0 week propelled the Bears into 5th place in the conference, and will try to extend their lead over 6th-place Pima when the two square off Thursday afternoon in Tucson. Volleyball Hitting the stretch drive has always meant good things for Amanda Liebermann’s Bears, and if last week is an indication, it is again this year. The Bears snapped a three-match losing streak with a pair of impressive wins at home vs. Pima (in four sets) Wednesday and at Mesa Friday (in a sweep). The Pima win gave the Bears the upper hand in the race for the #3 seed in Division II, and they’ll try to maintain that hold with a victory this Friday night at Chandler-Gilbert at 7PM. Football A 10-hour bus ride and the ‘Snow College Mystique’ was too much for the Bears as they took it on the chin at the hands of the Badgers. It was only the second time this season that the Bears’ margin of defeat was by more than a touchdown. Now the Bears head into the final week of the regular season hoping to get their first win of the season in their last home game as they’ll host archrival Scottsdale at ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Night with Bear Football’ at Hogan Field at Hoy Stadium this Saturday beginning at 7PM.
