Men’s Super Cup Final – Summary Barceloneta completes Spanish double Double joy for Spanish water polo: soon after Sabadell retained the women’s Super Cup, Champions League winner Atletic Barceloneta crashed Spartak Volgograd (RUS) 12-7 in the men’s final, much to the joy of the sell-out crowd in the Saint Jordi Pool in Barcelona. The Russians could withstand the hosts’ pressure for two periods but it was clear even during the first half that the Champions League winning Spaniards had more tools in front. Their attacks were colourful, they created chances from counters, took some fine shots from outside and their 6 on 5s also gave some headache for the Volgograd players. The Euro Cup winners could keep up by scoring only from man-ups wnr in the middle of the second they trailed by only a single goal at 4-3. Then they started to miss their extras and that put them out of contest. In the meantime the Spaniards were quick to crash them: it happened in the third, Barceloneta came up with a 4-0 rush. Their leftie, Gonzalo Echenique enjoyed a fantastic spell, scoring a hat-trick alone in this quarter and he stopped at 6 finally. Jumping to a 9-3 lead, the last period offered less excitement but some spectacular moves, and at least a couple of Russian goals, ending a scoring draught lasting for 15:25 minutes. The final eight minutes produced seven hits but the triumph of Barceloneta was never in danger. This was the first Super Cup trophy for Barceloneta – creating history on an already historical day which saw the two Super Cup finals held together for the first time. It was a tremendous promotion of water polo – and more to follow soon as the men’s Champions League prelims kick off in a week time. What the coaches said Jesus Martin (Barceloneta) “Volgograd is a tough team to beat they have a handful of strong and powerful players. It was the game’s intensity which brought us this victory. This is another great day in the history of our club as we managed to add the second European title to our tally.” Vladimir Karaboutov (Spartak) “Congratulations to Barceloneta for their great win. They bettered us in all fields, they were faster in offense, faster in defence, in every move – so our defeat was inevitable.” Men’s Super Cup Final Atletic Barceloneta (ESP) vs. Spartak Volgograd (RUS) 12-7 For details, scorers, play-by-play and other stats visit LEN’s brand new live-scoring site at: microplustiming/LENSuperCup/indexCL_web.php?live=1
