Meralco begins carrying out restoration efforts as typhoon subsides Meralco said today, July 16, that as of press time, around 86 percent of its customers are left without power. The distribution utility (DU) confirmed that the transmission lines of the National Grid Corporation of the Philippines (NGCP) in the Southern Luzon grid remain to be out. Due to said outages of vital NGCP transmission lines, generation plants in the South are unable to deliver power to Meralco. With the total outage of supply from the South, efforts to convey power from the Northern grid is being undertaken. Based on the DU’s coordination with the NGCP, it was reported that the system operator is currently assessing the extent of the damage to its transmission facilities. In addition, Meralco is also currently assessing the extent of damage in its distribution facilities including poles, transformers, wires, and subtransmission lines. It said that it is also currently repairing its damaged facilities and is doing its best to be able to restore power to affected areas. Meralco, however, said that it still could not give an estimated time as to when power will be restored, especially in the hardest hit areas of the franchise like Calabarzon. The DU said that restoration time depends on several factors including how soon the affected transmission facilities will be operational, the volume of debris that has to be cleared in affected areas, and the extent of damage to Meralco’s own distribution facilities, among others. Meralco appealed for the public’s understanding as it continues its restoration efforts. The DU assured its customers that is gearing all its efforts and is continuously coordinating with the NGCP and other stakeholders to be able to bring power back to affected areas and customers at the soonest possible time.
