Mercury seems to be determined of climbing Everest as it has recorded all time high of 47 degree Celsius with no relief from long power cuts and water shortage. When fire falls from the sky...we Allahabad people look down towards earth for relief....And we are very lucky to have some delightful treasure given to us by mother nature. One of these is having a treat of Muskmelon and watermelons providing immediate relief from unbearable heat.Known far and wide as Kajri Kahrbooja.....the aroma is just awesome ....Only Allahabadis are fortunate enough to have the blessing on earth. Fruit lovers can savour the mouth watering muskmelons & watermelons of Allahabad,The belt along the Ganga from Phaphamau onwards is the hub of farming at places like Dafri, Kulesarghat and Puramufti in Kaushambi. The scorching summer sun is a boon for muskmelon as its sweetness is directly proportional to exposure to sunlight. Muskmelon (Cucumis melo L.) is one of the most important dessert cucurbits throughout the world. The crop is annual with climbing, creeping, or trailing vines, and its fruits are many-seeded pepo. In India, many muskmelon landraces are grown in different regions. Lucknow safeda, Baghpat melon of Meerut, Jaunpuri netted, Mau melon, Kajari of Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh), Tonk melon of Rajasthan, Kharri melon of Hosangabad of Madhya Pradesh, Goose melon and Kavit Jam or Neel of Northern Maharastra, Bathesa of Andhra Pradesh, and Haridhari of Punjab are a few common landraces grown by farmers using their own saved seeds. The sowing season of watermelon grown on the banks of Ganga begins in December last week and the crop gets ready by mid-April after which the farmers send them to local markets laden atop camels and trucks. Apart from this, the local variety is also sent to neighbouring districts of Rewa, Satna, Katni and Jabalpur in Madhya Pradesh . May be anyone has been not familiar with the taste of all varieties but what i feel that Kajri Of Allahabad is the best ..... And we as locals of Allahabad are always proud and feel blessed to have this when Mercury fires up like a rocket.Happy Enjoying the blessings of summer.
