Merdeka Day 2014 is now the day of infamy for this country. It marks the beginning of a new era of colonisation worse than that under the British. Under the latter, we had at least the rule of law and an impeccable judicial system. Now, these have gone to the dogs. Democracy exists only in name, and constitutional monarchy morphed, while racism and corruption run wild. This is the result of 57 years of Umno’s rule – from a model democracy with exemplary democratic institutions that are the envy of the region, degenerating into a virtual failed state at risk of disintegration along racial and religious lines under corrupt tyrannical rule. Malaysians must reflect deeply how a nation endowed with all the blessings of abundant natural resources and ideal geography and climate and inheriting an excellent administration from its colonial master could have fallen to this wretched state. After deep thoughts, Malaysians must decide what they should do next – maintain the status quo, or break decisively with the past to reach for new frontiers for the nation.
