Merry Christmas National Parks & Monument members. This years card features photos of sites in some Chilean and Argentinian National Parks. Clockwise from top left Bob on the hike to Mt. Fitzroy. A beautiful warm and sunny day for a 18km hike out of El Chalten, Argentina. Another hike but on this one the winds were a force on the flats but not so bad as we started to climb. In the background you can see the “Towers”, famous landmark of Torres del Paine National Park in Chile. Kellie on a cruise out to Perito Merino Glacier, located in Los Glacieras National Park. Nearest town is El Calafate Argentina. There is a famous trek in Chile called the “W” , named after the shape the trail takes up various valleys. On the middle section of the W we trekked to the French Glacier. The winds were so strong that one of the girls in our group was blown off her feet. Mt. Fitzroy dominates the landscape just beyond the small town of El Chalten. One of the most beautiful settings for a town you can find, it exists to service trekkers and climbers. Another photo of Perito Merino Glacier. After the boat ride we took the bus to the visitor centre and got up close to the glacier on the multi-levelled boardwalk. The glacier is 30km long and 5km wide and 80m deep at its face here on Lago Argentino. The final leg of the W trek and just as windy as the previous day. In the background you can see the enormous Grey Glacier behind Kellie. I could hear rain falling on our tent during the night but it cleared off in time to do this trek. We experienced both rain and snow on this trip but never when we were out trekking.
