Merry Christmas, a Christianized celebration of a pagan solstice celebration. Its our puny attempt to honor Almighty God. The worst part about our Christian celebration is our own failure to put Christ into Christmas in the first place. Its not the manger or the Wise Men or Bethlehem. Its Christ, Emmanuel meaning God with us. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God and the Word was God. . . . and the Word became Flesh and dwelt among us. John 1:1, 14) When Jesus told the disciples to go into the world and spread the Good News, He wasnt talking about Adam Smith or the U.S. Constitution or government policy. Instead of relying on ancient memories of Scriptures we have read long ago, dust off those Bibles and read again what Christ said and what He did. Calvinism, Catholicism, Church of God in Christ--these are not the Way, the Truth, the Life. Read with fresh eyes, the recorded Words of Jesus. As a teacher of rhetoric and composition, I know that the oft-repeated phrases are very important. Go see what Jesus was talking about. And I want those who make our laws and our policies to be like my Jesus.
