Meru, Kenya: Meru County Woman Representative Florence Kajuju has reacted sharply to the National Campaign Against Drug Abuse (Nacada) proposal to regulate the consumption of miraa. Speaking Sunday in Meru town, Ms Kajuju criticised Nacadas intention to restrict chewing of the stimulant crop to only five hours a day. Nacada Director Mohamed Fazul has said the authority proposes to have miraa chewed between 5pm and 10pm, but Kajuju said that was impossible. Like we have said countless times before, miraa is not a drug and cannot be treated as such. When Nacada chairman John Mututho appeared before a Parliamentary committee I chaired on the crop, he agreed with lawmakers that it was not a drug. And when Frank Njenga spoke at a meeting in Maua where Deputy President William Ruto helped raise funds for the miraa case, he also confirmed it was not a drug, said Kajuju. Speaking last week, Mr Fazul said Nacada was drafting a law to regulate miraa consumption because it is a drug with two active ingredients, cathine and cathinone. Liquor plant Kajuju said Nacada wanted to wage war against a crop that is the lifeline of entire communities.
