Meryl Streep once said, “The great gift of human beings is that we have the power of empathy, and we can all sense a mysterious connection to each other.” Today was Codys surgery, and words cannot express how, while most concerned and nervous, I was bolstered in spirit by the many words of understanding, hope and encouragement that were sent Codys way by you! Codys surgery was successful, although it was more complicated than expected, because, in addition to the ruptured cranial cruciate ligament (TPLO procedure performed) and the medial luxating patella that needed repair, it was discovered that the meniscus was shattered, so the damaged portion needed to be scraped out and removed. Cody was still groggy from the anesthetic when we arrived at Dr. Nicholss office this evening, and he, while awake, seemingly, was not able to grasp that we were there. We transferred him to the ER clinic at Ryan Ranch where he is on a fluid drip and will be monitored throughout the night. My dog-loving friends will relate to how difficult it was to leave him there tonight, even though it is the most safe place for him to be, while he was in such a vulnerable state. Those of you who know me well appreciate how sensitive I am to confidentiality. Nevertheless, I cannot say enough about Dr. Jim Roush, the talented orthopedic surgeon who performed the surgery on Cody. When contacting me after the surgery, Dr. Roush was, at once, most professional and, yet, compassionate at the same time, as he talked about next steps in Codys 8-12 weeks recovery. Knowing that Cody is a therapy dog at CHOMP, he said, Not only is Cody a really good boy, but he brings healing to others. it goes without saying that, once more, our vet, Dr. Cynthia Nichols, was there for us. She was supportive all day, as were the incredible staff members, Stacey and Tammy. We are blessed that so many people love Cody as we do! Thank you for listening to my lengthy epistle.
