Message by pastor Jonathan Els Proverbs 3: 5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart… • There are many things people put their trust in today… you’ve seen them. David also knew a few. He said in Psalm 20:7: “Some trust in chariots, and some in horses; but we will remember the name of the Lord our God.” It is interesting that he says ‘remember’. You see, God has never called you to trust Him because He’s done nothing… He calls us to trust Him because of what He’s already done. We could say He is TRUSTWORTHY! So how do we trust? By ‘remembering’ what He’s done! • God calls us to trust with ALL our hearts. There is a reason He refers to ALL. Not everyone trusts, and even those who do, don’t trust with their ALL, which means there are 3 kinds of people in the world today…those who do not trust, those who trust half-heartedly and those who trust wholeheartedly. Now you may understand that people don’t trust at all or trust wholeheartedly, but have you ever wondered how people trust…yet half-heartedly? 2 Chron. 25: 2: “(Amaziah) and he did what was right in the sight of the Lord, but not with a loyal heart” Clearly the difference between half and wholeheartedness is complete loyalty. Loyalty is the place you come to after you trusted God for what He has done for you, but now you trust Him, even when it feels He does nothing. (RELY) And lean not on your own understanding… • Now here’s the danger… when you become loyal to the Lord, and you begin to trust Him no matter what, you CAN run the risk of thinking you understand why He is doing what He’s doing, even when you don’t. There is also a kind of a conflict here – Solomon tells us to gain understanding but then not to lean on it. He is not saying don’t lean on any understanding… but rather don’t lean on your OWN! If you are loyal to the Lord, then lean on how He understands things… His understanding… His ways…His thoughts. The best way to unlearn the ability to lean on my own understanding is to not gain it in the first place, in other words, to be safe from leaning on my own understanding I must approach EVERY scenario from God’s perspective. This could also be called – acknowledging Him. (REST) In all your ways acknowledge Him… • I do this by simply asking: How does God look at this, what would He do and what is He thinking about this? Jesus said in Mt. 6: 33: “But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” (RECOGNIZE) And He shall direct your paths. • There is a divine pattern here… just in case you missed it. RELY-REST-RECOGNIZE-RIGHT. To direct means to smooth or to straighten. God is able to fill every valley, to make very mountain and hill low, to make the rough ways smooth and to make crooked place straight. It will cost reliance, rest and recognition.
