Message from: Barbie Atkins Art Teacher Robinson Middle School, My name is Barbie Atkins, I am the new art teacher at Robinson Middle School in Topeka (and am new to the area). I am looking for NOTO artists to hopefully volunteer to come speak to/show my kiddos about art and I was wondering if the admins of this page would be able to direct me in the right direction. I am trying to pull the community into my art room/ introduce my kiddos to local careers in the arts as well as different media and processes. To do this, I thought it would be fun to host First Fridays in the art room, where artists/members of the Topeka art community would come in the art room on First Friday and talk to my kids. Artists or art world members could come talk about their experience/ show artwork/ talk about process/ talk about NOTO/ host a short activity - anything, really. If you know of anyone who might be interested in volunteering their time and creativity, I would really appreciate any collaboration! I realize this is short notice for October 3rd, but my hope is that this will be an on-going engagement that pulls many new faces into the art room, so any month could be a possibility for visiting artists. Robinson has 7th and 8th grade art (4 classes total). Our art classes are 42 minutes long, and run from 11:17p.m. - 2:45 p.m. (with a break for lunch). So anyone who is interested in speaking would potentially be giving 4 presentations or activities (whatever we decide to do - this is open and I am happy to help in anyway that i can!) Unfortunately, the engagement wouldnt pay anything, but I would be more than happy to provide lunch! Thank you, i realize this is a rather odd request. Being new to the area is a bit of a challenge when it comes to doing community art projects! My hope for my classroom is to foster meaningful art experiences. I have students that tell me that they already know they want a life in the arts, but dont know how to go about it. I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to not only foster community collaboration, but to also show my kiddos real world, local opportunities that exist. I really appreciate any help/advice you might be able to give. I can be reached here on fb by message, or my school email is [email protected] or my school phone is 785-295-3770. Thank you so much for your time, I hope to hear from you! Barbie Atkins Art Teacher Robinson Middle School
