Message from Chargé d’Affaires, a.i., Kathleen FitzGibbon: The good news is that an Emergency Operations Center was set up this week to coordinate the fight against Ebola. It is a joint effort chaired by the Minister of Health and Sanitation and the World Health Organization’s Resident Coordinator. This central hub coordinates the daily operational aspects of the response, including surveillance, case management, logistics, and communications. This will enhance program management and accountability. On the ground, there are now 60 survivors who beat Ebola. The paramount chiefs, market women, bike riders, and artists are mobilizing support to encourage all Sierra Leoneans to help out and cooperate with health officials. Tracing and monitoring the contacts of Ebola victims is critical to defeating this disease. Meanwhile, in the United States, the Centers for Disease Control in Atlanta has stood up an Emergency Operations Center to support host governments battling with Ebola. We are proud to have with us several U.S. Government experts assisting the Ministry of HOHS and WHO. Remember, if you have been in close contact with someone with Ebola, get help from health officials. Do not try to treat an Ebola victim yourself. Kenema and Kailahun have the facilities and experience to do so. Let’s all stay focused on preventing more infections through public awareness! freetown.usembassy.gov/ambassador.html
