Message from Inspector Gary Thompson GEELONG Picture The latest quarterly crime figures (rates per 100,000 population) show a notable reduction in Crime against the Person. This is a pleasing result for local police. Overall, assaults and assaults excluding family violence will continue to be targeted and investigated through operational policing responses and through the Family Violence Unit, which supports the broader Geelong Police Service Area (PSA). Detected drug offences continue to be on the increase and burglary (other – commercial burglaries) is showing a decrease. This displays the ongoing excellent work provided by the Divisional Response Unit, High Volume Crime Team and Crime Investigation Units. These units continue to be extremely active and significant arrests continue to be made. These units will continue to tackle serious crime groups and illicit drug activity and are continuously supported with information provided by the community. Slight increases in burglary (residential) and property damage are causing some concern as is the ongoing trend of theft of and from motor car. These offences continue to be a priority for local police. Police will continue to rely on community buy-in and will continue to request owners (at all hours day and night) to ensure their premises and vehicles remain locked at all times. Night shift patrols, concentrated patrols through identified neighbourhoods, media releases and community notifications will continue. Police will continue to work within the Geelong Central Activities Area and assist retailers, licensed venue operators, their staff, the City of Greater Geelong and local taxi providers in order to minimise behavioural issues and reduce violence. With improved use of intelligence and rostering patterns across all police units, including Highway Patrols, we continue to see positive outcomes in the reduction of serious road trauma and again will provide a good lead up to the warmer months. Driver distraction, specifically the use of mobile phones whilst driving, continues to remain a high priority for all traffic enforcement. As the Local Area Commander, I encourage the community to call Triple Zero (000) in any emergency or if witnessing a crime or suspicious behaviour and to call 1800 333 000 (Crime Stoppers) with information they may have relating to a crime.
