Message from Will Austin Greetings from afar. This is Barnstaple High Street yesterday. Pedestrianised, busy, seemingly supported by the traders, and serving a town with a slightly smaller population than Haverhill. On the right next to Smiths is M&S, one of a range of popular retailers (e.g. Next, Primark, Waterstones, Fat Face, Game, Tesco Express, to name a few) that seem to thrive alongside a strong independent sector in this environment. The rate of empty shops is low. Wages in Barnstaple are low compared with Haverhill and it is surrounded by competitor towns. The High Street itself is long and linear, like Haverhills, but unlike Haverhill few of the shops seem to have rear access for delivery (though they do seem to cope quite comfortably). Even the taxi companies seem to have come to terms with it! Im just saying... Missing home, by the way, though I guess Ill grow to love Barnstaple as much as I do Haverhill.
