Met 8 amazing women last night in my first Prenatal Pilates class of 2014! I can tell its going to be a fun session. We discussed pelvic floor muscles. Trivia question: In pregnancy should you be more concerned with CONTRACTING or RELAXING your Kegel muscles? Answer: Both. It is important to contract these muscles especially with activities that increase your intra-abdominal pressure (laugh, cough, sneeze, lift, etc) to help protect this vulnerable area and prevent conditions like stress incontinence and prolapse (YES---even you C-section mamas arent off the hook on this one!). BUT.....these muscles need to practice relaxing fully as well, especially if youre having a vaginal delivery, to help the baby to slide out. How to find them? Imagine you are sitting over a ripe strawberry. To practice contracting your pelvic floor lift these muscles like you are stopping the flow of urine and try to create a little pocket of air to protect your strawberry (do not contract your tummy or bottom). To practice relaxing, allows these same muscles to drop into the surface you are sitting on to smash your strawberry and make jam. Want to learn more? Consider joining my next session (sessions FULL for Jan and Feb but spots are open for March in Oswego, Hinsdale and Geneva). Visit pilatesbycarrie to register!
