Met a lovely old lady yesterday... Popped out to the deli for a late lunch snack (around 2:15) to grab a quick sandwich and found myself queuing behind an elderly lady who was struggling to make herself understood. I heard her say that she was blind but noted that she was alone. The assistant at the counter eventually helped her to her seat but didnt really go out of her way to make her comfortable. The place was nearly empty and I heard the lady ask, Where are the other diners? Hello, I said, Im dining here. I wonder if I might join you once I get my sandwich. (Id actually been planning to take it back to my desk but thought she might appreciate some company). That would be lovely, she replied. I introduced myself and she told me her name was Peggy Scott. I helped Peggy to get comfortable at the table and then over the next 20 minutes or so, assisted her with her soup, adding water to cool and then sugar to sweeten, while munching my own sandwich as we chatted about life, family, her blindness and the unfortunate accident that caused it. Peggy - a local - proudly announced that she is to turn 91 on New Years Eve and Im delighted to report that she will have the company of friends and family this Christmas. Shes actually entertaining! Peggy thanked me profusely for helping her and I said that one day, I hoped someone might help me out in the same way. Why am I posting this? Im certainly not looking for a pat on the back but I just wanted to share something very positive. We have an ageing population. Many are lonely and Christmas is the worst time to be alone. Try to make a little time to look in on an elderly neighbour or relative. It wont cost you much time and youll derive an immense feeling of wellbeing from a simple act of kindness. I certainly did. Thanks Peggy.
