Metal prices and our charge... With the cost of metal down, taking springs to the recycler has just got a whole lot less rewarding. The per tonne rate paid for metal wasnt all that exciting so to speak in the first place so yet another reduction in the price paid is making it all the less worth while, being a problem metal due to the fineness of the wire doesnt help either - were constantly reminded by the scrap merchants how very irritating the springs are but we already know that from our own perspective of handling them on a daily basis. The next time someone complains to us about our charge of $20 per mattress/base and in particular, how expensive it is. Perhaps we should let them know the true monies made from recycling these problem waste items as they are referred to in the waste industry. The recycling process is of very little return at all in fact, in most cases we receive less than $10.00 for each mattress or base we dismantle and whilst we wed like to reduce our per piece charge to assist our customers - financially it would be impossible. Whilst $20.00 may appear expensive to some, remember the amount we receive after costs such as tip fees (all materials cannot be reused), fuel (to collect the mattresses and bases in the first place), labour (to dismantle/refurbish) - not to mention other outgoings such as the leasing of commercial premises in order to store and carry out the dismantling and refurbishing processes, water, rates and so on. Those who complain about our charge could always dispose of theyre old mattress and base at the local tip, the charge of around $30.00 per piece there wont stop them complaining but after also taking into accout the above - might atleast give them some insight and perspective from our point with regard to our charge(s).
