Metro Transit Program Guarantees Reliable Northstar Service, or Free Ride Metro Transit will launch a month-long program Jan. 1 that backs up its commitment to reliable service on the Northstar Commuter Rail Line. Throughout January, commuters who register for the Northstar Service Guarantee program will be refunded their fare for any regularly-scheduled weekday trip that arrives at the Big Lake or Target Field stations 11 or more minutes late. The program is recognition of the patience Northstar commuters have shown during delayed trips that have occurred since last winter. Metro Transit is also expressing its confidence in Northstar’s reliability and encouraging customers who may have left to come back. “The delays that have occurred on some Northstar trips are largely out of Metro Transit’s control but that doesn’t diminish our responsibility to our customers or our obligation to make things better in the future,” Metro Transit General Manager Brian Lamb. “This program is our way of thanking customers who have stayed with us and inviting those who may have left to give us another chance.” Since planned track maintenance concluded this fall, Northstar delays have been limited. Track maintenance was led by BNSF, which owns the tracks on which Northstar operates and oversees freight and passenger rail operations on the corridor. Northstar customers can begin registering for the service guarantee program on Thursday, Dec. 19. Additional details are available at metrotransit.org/northstar. The Northstar Commuter Rail Line offers service between Big Lake and Target Field stations in downtown Minneapolis, where riders connect with bus and light rail lines to reach destinations throughout the Twin Cities Metro Area. Northstar stations are located in Elk River, Ramsey, Anoka, Coon Rapids and Fridley. Northstar Link provides connecting express bus service between Big Lake and St. Cloud.
