Meyer Minute for October 14 “For what we proclaim is not - TopicsExpress

Meyer Minute for October 14 “For what we proclaim is not ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, with ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake.” (2 Corinthians 4:5) That’s not how we often interact with one another, is it? We are all in authority structures, some higher, others lower. We understand the Roman official when he described himself as “a man set under authority, with soldiers under me: and I say to one, ‘Go,’ and he goes; and to another, ‘Come,’ and he comes; and to my servant, ‘Do this,’ and he does it.’” (Luke 7:8) Authority structures bless our life together, they give order instead of anarchy, guide us in our working relationships, win wars, land on the moon, and generally help get necessary things done. But esteem yourself on the basis of your place in the pecking order? Then you sin because you set aside the servant attitude of Christ. “Dear God, I am the president of Concordia Seminary; I am the grand Poobah around this place. I have authority.” A voice came from heaven saying, “You have squat authority. Don’t ever forget that I have redeemed you, a lost and condemned creature, purchased and won you from all sins, from death and from the power of the devil. And I didn’t do it with gold or silver but with my Son’s holy, precious blood and with His innocent suffering and death. And why? So that you might be My own, live under Me, and serve Me. Get it? Serve Me! (Adapted from Martin Luther, “Small Catechism”) Who’s lord of your life?
