Miami Dade College’s Galleries of Art + Design Presents the Works of Cuban Painter, Emilio Hector Rodriguez Miami, January 17, 2014 - Miami Dade College’s (MDC) Galleries of Art + Design will feature the opening of BASIC: A Geometric Approach, New Works by Emilio Hector Rodriguez, Friday, Jan. 31. The show runs through April 30, 2014, and can be viewed at the Gallery at West, 3800 NW 115 Ave., Doral. BASIC is an art exhibition where the language of geometric abstraction, in its representation by means of clean lines or the simplicity of pure forms, creates an environment where the beauty emerges from the simplicity. This exhibition has been articulated with the paradigms of an art based on the beauty of chromatic and structural elements. “By renouncing my usual personal vocabulary with the artworks included in this exhibition, I pretend to draw the attention from the public to the beauty that lies not in the imitation of the real world, but in the composition itself and in organizing the lines and forms in the space. Lines and shapes give us all your beauty,” said Rodriguez. Born in Sancti Spiritus, Cuba, in 1950, Rodriguez moved with his family to Havana at the age of three. Having encountered art from an early age by visiting the different museums on the island, he exhibited a precocious talent for painting and drawing, and started experimenting with oil paint and tempera at the age of 12. Despite having studied under the tutelage of Cuban painter Jesus Antonio Valdovino Diaz at a center for visual arts in Havana, his academic career led him to study classical guitar, pure mathematics, and finally, computer science. He moved with his family to Miami in 1982 – after spending a year in Paris – where he started working as a computer analyst/programmer. Abstract painting has become his latest interest and passion. The artist will be present on opening day of his show to answer questions, beginning at 10 a.m. For more information, please call the Galleries of Art + Design at 305-237-7700.
