Michael Franti & Spearheads song SAME AS IT EVER WAS makes a very powerful statement about the legacy of old wounds and the lineage of broken humanity. I am happy to re-post as its in his classic style he is unafraid to speak truth to power but he is also sure to make his message a healing one. The timing is perfect...... These have been deeply trying times for people of conscience. The murder of the two cops was truly terrible--lets be real--but for the PD in NY and all over this damned nation to not admit to the centuries of racist and classist murder and repression is an absolute lie, all part of protectionist cover-up. And eventually someone starts seeking out an eye for an eye. I cannot agree with that mentality but there is an ongoing series of victims, largely among the Black, brown and poor. And there are two executed cops who may never have engaged in this kind of brutality. Most maddening is that the recent cases of police engaged in actions that resulted in the deaths of unarmed victims have ended in acquittal. And so whats left is a populace on the edge of boiling over. Killing is simply wrong and each side has to see that---but until the police can recognize the ties that bind them to the law enforcement actions over the past hundred-fifty years or more, there can be no true peace. History is filled with terrible incidents like murderous Klansmen sheriffs, patrolmen who protect their beat by assaulting and threatening suspects, the detectives who busted labor unions with gunfire, the oppressive Red Squads who engaged in COINTELPRO and violated rights on a daily basis, the corrupt graft and shake-down artists and the cops who imprisoned and violated endless stream of people of color.
