Michael: I received this message that I think is thought provoking and worth sharing and makes me rethink my previous post: Ok quick question about your post, that Elliot is not our kid. People are calling him a sociopath and spoiled and entitled. Isnt a sociopath aka antisocial personality a mental illness recognized by the dsm? By saying he isnt one of ours are you saying the kids with mental illness whos main characteristics are selfishness and plain being an asshole arent in the same category as kids who have schizophrenia, bipolar, autism? Can those kids help it anymore than a bipolar child? There is a very ugly side of mental illness. The one that makes people do horrible things and hurt loved ones and strangers alike for simple reasons that dont make sense to us. But I am sorry to say they are ours as well. Its much easier to convince people that Jani, Bodhi, and Briana are mentally ill. You can see it. But a child who looks, acts, and learns to adapt to societies norms is much harder to get treatment for. Those parents fought to the end to save there son and I cant just brush him off as not one of ours by the way he died. - not looking for a fight or to be argumentative. I just hope the JF gives some thought into which of the MI DSM they are willing to claim and which they are not. Thanks Follow on from me: It is certainly true that his parents did everything within their power to prevent what happened. I do want to make that clear.
