Michael: SCANXIETY [skan-zahy-i-tee] 1. the tension which builds particulary amongst those who have or have had cancer as they move towards their check up scan, hyperscanxiety being the period as they await results! Scanxiety is in full effect this week. Grant will have a CT scan, Bone Marrow biopsy, and MIBG scan on Wed. and Thurs. of this week. It seems like an eternity ago that we heard those words that no parent would ever think they would hear. Then we heard it was stage 4, then unfavorable histology, then in his bone marrow and lymph nodes. It all came back the worst of the worst. Each time the percentages of success dropping. What seemed like a year ago was only 3 months ago. Tomorrow will mark our 40th day in the hospital out of the last 86 days. Thats 40 days and nights apart from the kids, from our family, and for most of it apart as husband and wife. We have no reason to believe it has been in vain. Grant has really impressed the doctors and has flown through most of the chemo rounds. When his counts rebound after a chemo, so does he. Full of energy again before he gets hit with another round. It all looks like the chemo is working beautifully and scans should be very positive. Then you have a hospital stay like this one and the scanxiety really kicks in. If you want to meet one of the worst feeling 2 year olds in Atlanta right now, just come to room 138. Grant has not eaten since last Tuesday and is on nutrition via IV. He has fought a fever for the last couple of days and is still going in between 99 and 103. He is absolutely miserable and inconsolable. He received his 2nd batch of blood today in the last week. His counts are having a harder time rebounding than they ever have. That is where your mind starts to wander about these scans and what they might show. The doctors say this is a glimpse of what the stem cell transplant will be like. We are looking forward to some sort of confirmation this week that Grant is moving in the right direction. We need his fever to subside and his counts to start moving up...otherwise they will delay his scans as they will not put him under anesthesia under these conditions. We know that Gods statistics are the only ones that matter and he can squash Grants cancer in a nano-second. We pray that just that is in Gods plan for our family and for Grant. We pray to hear those words that every parent in this situation yearns to here. Grant is NED (No Evidence of Disease)! One step at a time. One prayer at a time. #graceforgrant
