Michael Van De Elzens culinary trip to Tasmania. The Event was invited the world to dinner They invited 250 of the worlds chefs, foodies and bloggers. There was AA gill from the uk, Heston. B, Maggie beer, 3 Michelin star chefs, the entire masterchef team to name a few. This is the second time I have been to Tasmania and I was excited to be back as its truly is wonderful place. The idea behind Restaurant Australia was to show case the best of Australian food produce. So they took 3 of Aussies best chefs being, Ben Shewry from Attica in Melbourne, Peter Gilmore from Quay in Sydney and Neil Perry from Rockpool in Sydney The a dinner was held at Mona museum, built by David Walsh who made all his money from gambling. He took what was a old vineyard on a islands and cut a straight down the center of it. Creating the most amazing space. Show casing the Aussie produce is what they did! We started with oysters from Bruny island before we got shifted onto speed boats to be take to the next stop. Earth fire and water Jumbo crayfish with wasabi butter, Tasmanian abalone with mirin, whiting cooked in paperbark. All cooked on open BBQ and charcoals. Then onto Mona by boat again. Entering Mona via fire throwers to start down the spiral stairs into one of the main rooms which had One table set up for 250 people! The courses where Salted south Australian kangaroo with bunya buyna Confit pig with black abalone and fermented grains Grilled 330 day grain fed sirloin with braised cheek and oysters The dinner with then finished with roaming desserts OMG, its was a truly fantastic night and I have to take my hat of to the Australian tourism board they know how to throw a party. Austraila want to to show the world there is more to them than just the outback and the GC. Food experiences are a big part of over all plan. I guess with the mining industry starting to slow down they are looking to food and produce to carry the county forward. NZ could learn allot for this and start to showcase our wonder people and produce with an event like this.
