Michael Wolfe, PhD will discuss how research contradicts many common learning myths, and then will teach us more effective, research based strategies. Look for his workshop at the Community Literacy Summit! CRACKING COMMON LEARNING MYTHS Advice for how to improve reading comprehension can be varied and contradictory, and educators often end up using their own intuitions about what is effective. In this presentation, I will describe three widely held beliefs about reading and learning that turn out to be incorrect. The three beliefs are: (1) Students learn best in their preferred learning style. (2) Increasing students’ interest will result in increases in learning. (3) Re-reading is an effective reading strategy after a student has read something once. Not only are these incorrect, but effective strategies are often exactly backwards of what many people think. I will present research relating to each of these points. The presentation will include practical suggestions for avoiding ineffective strategies and using more effective ones instead. Finally, there will be time for discussion, questions, and comments. PRESENTER Michael Wolfe is an Associate Professor of Psychology at Grand Valley State University. He received his PhD in Cognitive Psychology from the University of Colorado, Boulder. Dr. Wolfe’s research expertise is in reading comprehension, learning, and memory.
